Chess is one of the oldest strategy games in the world. The game captivated people long before the computer age. Today, however, many board games have fallen somewhat out of fashion, which may well be due to computer games. Children are spending more and more time on their own at the computer, preferring to build cities or tear them down again. With “Fritz & Fertig,” however, the time-honored game of chess is reclaiming its rightful place.
The jury awarded “Fritz & Fertig” first place in the German Children’s Software Award.
Here’s what the jury says:Finally, a program that teaches little ones a game known to promote brain development—one that even Mom and Dad aren’t really good at. It’s the kind of activity where kids learn not only to think, but also to sit still and concentrate. In short: a dream come true!
“Fritz & Fertig” bridges the gap between generations. Even parents and grandparents know what chess is all about. But anyone expecting a comprehensive introduction and set of rules will be disappointed. The introduction to the “game of games” couldn’t be more playful—it takes its time and allows room for detours. That’s all well and good, because chess is, not least, a certain “way of thinking” that can certainly be illustrated and learned through other, simpler games. “Fritz” does this very well. Just imagine how thrilled the jury members were when they were immediately allowed to sign up for the leaderboard of the world’s best toilet-smashers! The whole thing is a game arcade in which children are meant to practice using the game board, a bit of “strategic thinking,” and strategy combined with movement. It takes quite a while before you actually get to the “King’s Game.”
The Terzio game “Fritz & Fertig” succeeds, like few others, in conveying content in a completely targeted way through a well-thought-out, fun concept. This is educational software at its finest. One more thing: both girls and boys play chess—many other programs appeal only to boys and their fathers.
