“Investnuts” wins the TOMMI because it uses a squirrel and nuts to explain to kids how investing money works. This educational game is about a squirrel that hibernates and wakes up again in the summer. To help it survive the winter, we have to plant enough nut trees. But if we plant everything, we won’t have anything left. So we have to do it very wisely. It’s fun because, unlike in real life, there’s no risk of losing all our money.

This app introduces children to the basics of investing in a playful way. Playing as a squirrel, they decide for themselves which nuts—or rather, which trees—to plant, since each type of tree yields different returns. This means they have to manage their resources wisely to turn a profit in the end. Children also learn why long-term planning makes sense. The complex mechanics are explained in an easy-to-understand way, the controls are intuitive, and the audiovisual presentation is designed with children in mind. The game is entertaining and encourages repeated play. A note: This is a commercial app, so keep that in mind when using it.
