The “Osmo Coding Starter Kit” should win the TOMMI Award because it gives even young children their first experience with programming. The instructions are very easy to understand, and if we place the tiles in the right order, the character moves in the right direction. We have to use our heads to do this; otherwise, we’ll never reach the cake. Collecting strawberries was fun. And we had no idea that programming could be so much fun.

The “Osmo Coding Starter Kit” combines three programs in one set. A little monster runs through a fantastical world, collecting strawberries, wood, and other items to spruce up its camp. The highlight of the game is its control system: Instead of typing in commands, children place control tiles labeled “Run,” “Jump,” “Take,” and “Repeat” in front of the tablet. Through this, children learn the basics of algorithmic thinking in a playful way. The program is engaging and varied.
